Protecting the Gateway to Your Data
Modern web applications rely heavily on external APIs: payment processors, SMS gateways, WhatsApp Cloud, and AI LLM endpoints. However, building insecure API integrations can expose your company to massive financial liability and data breaches.
The Top 4 API Security Vulnerabilities:
1Leaking Private API Keys in Frontend Client Bundles:
*The Danger:* Storing a private secret key (e.g. OpenAI API key or Razorpay Secret) in frontend React code. Anyone can open DevTools Network tab or inspect the JavaScript bundle and steal your credentials within 10 seconds.
*The Rule:* Private keys must NEVER exist on the frontend. The frontend calls your own backend API, which securely proxies the request using server-side environment variables.
2Unbounded Retries During Third-Party Outages:
If an external API is down, never retry in an infinite while(true) loop. Use exponential backoff with jitter to prevent accidentally launching a denial-of-service attack against your own integration.
3Missing IP Whitelisting on Sensitive Endpoints:
For internal admin APIs and database migrations, restrict access to verified corporate IP ranges or VPN gateways.
